To make a permanent production decal:
Papilio liquid urethane is the
most durable and strongest top coating you can use with our PAS
decal paper or as a top coating for any other media or finish. Besides
being extremely strong and scratch resistant, it is also very flexible;
so flexible that it can be used on a vinyl banner.
The PAS paper instructions recommend printing the image in “mirror”
or flip horizontally and then apply the decal face down.
This is important for two reasons:
a) to let the decal film protect the ink (the image)
b) to make the decal more compatible with different top coatings
especially if you use an Alps printer. The Alps ink reacts with
almost all clear spray, except a few types of soft artist fixative
that give poor protection.
It is recommended to apply the decal face down and then apply clear
finish. The PAS film, which protects the ink if the decal is applied
face down, can handle almost any clear finish on the market.
But now by using our urethane over-laminate it is not necessary
to apply the decal face down when using a color laser printer and
not even when using an Alps printer.
But why use Papilio Liquid Urethane instead of some other epoxy
or similar product available in the nearest hardware store?
There are 3 reasons:
1. Durability
2. Flexibility
3. Strength
Epoxy sold in hardware stores is not manufactured to perform as
a thin film coating. No epoxy coating that we know of will offer
the strength of our urethane and flexibility at the same time.
The following may occur with epoxy use:
1) “Yellow", turn yellow after few months or one or two years
2) “Craze”, develop fine haze of hairline cracks due to lack of
flexibility
3) Poor water resistance, delaminates or turns “milky white". Loses
strength when soaked for an extended period of time.
Keep in mind that most epoxy will instantly smudge the Alps MD series
ink and some of the color laser toners, making it usable only as
an over-laminate, if the decal is applied face down. Most epoxy
is not waterproof and will yellow or become too hard or craze over
time.
Our Liquid Urethane is now being used by scale model artists, automobile
and motorcycle detailing shops, and as permanent top coating for
decals and artwork.
Instructions:
Ideal mixture ratio is 85% part A to 15% part B by volume. Or Mix
1 Part B to 5 Parts A for faster curing time.
Mix only the amount that you are going to use.
Mix the two parts well in a small, disposable container and then
pour the mixture into another container. Keep stirring the mixture
for a few minutes. Let the batch set for 15 minutes before use.
Pot life is about 3 hours depending on humidity and temperature.
The film will cure in 6 to 8 hours and reach full strength in a
few days.
Use Acetone to clean up if necessary. We recommend using disposable
mixing sticks, disposable small mixing cups, and disposable foam
pads. Foam pads are available from HPS.
Do not work with this urethane if the temperature is below 72 F.
